Tuhfet ul-Leta’if
Tuhfet ul-Leta’if (“The Gift of the Subtle”) is a prose epic focusing on a fictional prince named Shah Ramin and his lover Mah-Pervin, daughter of the evil grand vizier. During their repeated separations and reunions, they go on many adventures with their friends to faraway lands, where they battle dangerous adversaries, both human and supernatural. The story was composed in Ottoman Turkish during the 1440s by the court poet ‘Ali ibn Naqib Hamza. Now in the Aga Khan Museum Collection, this manuscript is the only known copy of the text. Completed in 1593–1594 for the Ottoman sultan Murad III (r. 1574–1595), many of the manuscript’s illustrations were enhanced with vast expanses of gold leaf and spread out over two full pages, providing great visual impact for this wildly imaginative story.
