While the Shahnameh tends to highlight the deeds of heroes and kings, it also contains many episodes that call attention to the values of camaraderie and friendship. Perhaps no other painting in the museum’s collection demonstrates this theme better than this illustration of Iranian warriors Bizhan and Gustaham. The two have just taken part in a battle between Iranian soldiers and their enemies, the Turanians. As the Turanians attempt to flee, Gustaham pursues them and is wounded. Seeing Gustaham twisted in pain, Bizhan comes to his friend’s aid, seizing the reins of Gustaham’s horse and leading him to a doctor. Zeroing in on the critical moment, the illustration diverts focus from the battle toward the bonds between friends.
